Berne is a well-known saxophonist primarily known for his avant-garde jazz work. Born in 1954 in Syracuse, NY, Berne developed an early interest in music, studying classical piano before gravitating toward the saxophone as a teenager. He later moved to Boston, where he attended the New England Conservatory of Music. In the 1980s, Berne emerged as an important figure in New York City's downtown scene, playing alongside many influential musicians such as Billy Hart, David Torn, and Bill Frisell. He has led numerous ensembles, including Tim Berne’s Bloodcount, Snakeoil, and the Big Satan Trio.
Roberts' work spans multiple genres, including jazz, classical, and experimental music. His first significant recordings as a leader began in the 1980s, including the album Black Pastels.
