JeJaWeDa at the Jazz Gallery in Milwaukee on October 4, 2026

This band is composed of trombonist Jeb Bishop, vocalist and sound poet Jaap Blonk, drummer Weasel Walter, and double bassist Damon Smith. They have had two stops in Wisconsin on their current tour -- Madison with BlueStem Jazz and here in Milwaukee last night at the Jazz Gallery.

I've seen all of these performers in various venues and bands many times going back as far as the late 1990s, but I still wasn't sure what was going to happen when their worldviews collided on the little stage in the corner of the Jazz Gallery.

What transpired was a full bore, chaotic, high energy performance with several members of the band at times wandering off stage and engaging in such shenanigans as playing trombone (Bishop) and repeatedly tossing a huge cymbal on the ground (Walter).

In a word -- it was a blast.

James McKain, Damon Smith, and Weasel Walter at the Sugar Maple in Milwaukee on August 3, 2025

James McKain, Damon Smith and Weasel Walter performed two short but energetic sets at the Sugar Maple in Milwaukee earlier this month. The music was freely improvised with all three musicians in rapt concentration and reacting in complex ways to each other's sounds.
